AI: #Tech4Good or #Tech4Bad ? AI: #Tech4Good or #Tech4Bad ? OpenAI released this week VoiceIA, an AI engine able to regenerate and clone a human voice & speech with less than a 15-second sample. But being afraid of the potential misuses of this new tool, they won’t make it public for now. As a reminder, within the context of US elections, “AI-generated robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden were sent to thousands of voters telling them to stay at home and abstain from voting” ! As a result, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to ban AI-generated robocalls … I wish you an excellent peaceful reading,

Explore 5G value or move to 6G ? Explore 5G value or move to 6G ? This week, the big tech event was in Barcelona: the MWC24, Mobile World Congress. Of course, plenty of AI/GenAI innovations applied to Telco. Even if some of them are not clear to me: What is the benefit of managing a car through your phone by eye tracking ? What about safety ? I prefer to keep concentrated on the road, by looking at…the road… An interesting survey conducted by GSMA showed that 47% of Mobile operators achieved the expected benefits on 5G but without significant financial returns. Only 30% of them achieved expected benefits and financial results. Before jumping to 6G, could be interesting to end our 5G Journey by looking at the lessons learnt. Enjoy your 0G reading,

How to steal $25 M in a few minutes with AI ? How to steal $25 M in a few minutes with AI ? This is definitively the biggest hold up of the year. Last week, a multinational was tricked into paying out an amazing $25 Million to hackers after a fake video conference. A real video conference but where all participants (CEO & other CXOs) were ... fake ! Fraudsters used to use emails for phishing before moving to phone calls. We know new technologies & AI now enable deepfake videos which are more than lifelike. More and more, the weakest link is the human part. GenAI or CyberSec ? GenAI or CyberSec ? As usual, a very good report released by the WEF on Cyber Security. Without any surprise, 30% of organizations reported they have been affected by a cyber incident over the last 12 months ... More alarming, the main issue to cope with this situation is coming from a talent shortage as the risks are growing faster than resources ... CEO commitment seems to be mandatory to tackle the problem with the appropriate level. 2022 was the year of Metaverse , 2023 the year of GenAI and we know that 2024 won’t change. Interesting approach even if not perfect but brings a new perspective for our global environmental impact & behaviour. It won’t replace the carbon footprint but gives more sense to our actions by adopting a more holistic approach. PQC : Post Quantum Crypto as the next big trend for 2024/2025 ? PQC : Post Quantum Crypto as the next big trend for 2024/2025 ? When Cyber meets Quantum ... Even if the standards are not yet ready, every American company working with the US government will have to take actions on PQC before 2025. Quantum will enable the breaking of the 256 bits algorithms which are protecting most of the encrypted documents used today. The only question is when ... 5 years, 10 years, or 20 years ? Nobody knows but this is why we speak about Y2Q : Year 2 Quantum, the year when Quantum can break the Security walls. One big difference with Y2K : The date was obvious ... My inspiration has gone. My inspiration has gone. Two days ago my godfather passed away, at 88. You might think: Time to go. Unfortunately, Love is endless, timeless. He was a shepherd, working since the age of 14, guiding his sheeps cattle over the Pyrenees mountain every year, over the last 7 decades, with the same passion. No time for rest ! I've always been passionated by innovation. But my models have never been Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or any other famous geek. Why did I get inspired by an old shepherd who was so far from my daily life ? In a period where everybody has to speak about values, sense, mission, he was the one breathing all of these words in a row: Tradition. Respect of the hard work, of the nature, passion for the mountain, experience of the past. That could be the link. What we call 'Innovation 4 Good', 'Sustainable Innovation', 'Innovation 4 the Planet', ... Innovate for a better world, respecting the tradition, the elders, asking ourselves if we are improving our way of life for giving & receiving more emotions instead of building more innovative ephemere goods supporting our buzz world and being finally ... useless. Show must go on, A dichat Michel !

Quantum over Space! Quantum over Space! The European Space Agency has been launching a new Quantum Project through the ARTes Program with the TeQuantS Project. Satellites could become the best and perhaps the only way to use Quantum Telecommunications. Transporting Quantum Information is a challenge, and optical fibers cannot keep the quantum states over long distances. Satellites using lasers could be the best way to support Quantum communications. The TeQuantS Project aims at proving this statement. Another Space opportunity!

Innovation, sovereignty and politics After the COVID crisis, the Ukraine war, and rising energy prices, all governments are now trying to define plans to reduce dependencies and regain sovereignty in many areas: energy, natural resources, semiconductors, electronics, digital and soon water and food... Digital innovation becomes useless if you are unable to build devices, networks and manage them. GDPR was the first rule to win data sovereignty and personal protection. We now need to move to the next level. Every country will now try to define their own policy depending on their history, resources, values and beliefs... Innovation at Scale: No more an option. It's difficult to spend a week without reading about drones’ innovations in the headlines. But it is much more difficult to find industrial rollout of these projects. Amazon’s drone delivery is a good illustration. A decade ago, Jeff Bezos was announcing that drones would change Amazon’s delivery. This major program was finally supposed to start at scale last December. Unfortunately, the D-Day was a complete failure, in front of the FAA. Two weeks later, only 7 houses had received an Amazon package delivered by drone. Regulation, certification, reliability—all these details that make the road from Innovation POC to Industrialization not so easy: Innovation at Scale...

AI Moratorium: The Joke of the week, anticipating April Fool’s Day! Interesting buzz this week around a letter asking for a 6-month moratorium on the development of new AI systems. I do agree, and have done for a long time, that AI HAS TO BE ETHICAL. But a 6-month moratorium won’t help to reach a worldwide agreement on how to move towards ethical AI, even if it is signed by more than a thousand researchers. Moreover, it is funny to see Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI (Chat-GPT & GPT4), asking to regulate AI, now that the rocket is launched. And last but not least, we all know a new battle has begun: AI Criminality. Asking all ethical companies to stop AI research will only generate a bigger gap between Dark AI & Ethical AI as I don’t see how criminals will stop their own research...

We've got news on OpenAI's attempts to watermark AI text that hit a bit of a snag, ChatGPT explaining why AIs like itself should be regulated (talk about self-awareness!), and Microsoft's integration of ChatGPT's technology into Bing that's sure to be a bright spot. Plus, we'll be exploring the potential for space-based solar power to realize our sci-fi dreams of unlimited energy and finding out how a new smart ball is tackling the world of rugby data. It's going to be a week full of technology that's truly out of this world!" Chief Vibes Officer to save the poor NFT... End of the game for the famous NFT Apes ? After the collapse of Bitcoin & Cryptos, NFTs are following the same treacherous descent to collapse. Some months ago, the first Tweet by Jack Dorsey was bought for $3 M as an NFT and the famous Bored Ape Yacht Club, an NFT depicting monkeys, was considered as Art. Today, the Tweet NFT was sold for.... $7 K & it is not certain the Bored Ape will follow with a Picasso-level valuation . To save NFTs, some Startups are creating a brand new job title : Chief Vibes Officer to create buzz & marketing around these volatile assets. Not sure it will be enough to save the apes...

Space Investments reach the sky ! In 2021, almost $ 16 billion have been invested in start-up space companies. Amazing growth if we compare to the $3 billion invested in 2015 ... Race to worldwide internet coverage provided by new LEO satellites constellations is definitively one of the reasons but all projects won’t succeed and many people will never see their money back. We cannot forget the Irridium bankrupt 2 decades ago or the OneWeb story more recently. Too many constellations programs will lead to merge & acquisitions while 5G & coming 6G will bring new competition.

The A380’s Come back ! Many news this week on Crypto currencies & NFT of course. But another interesting news is coming from the sky, linked with all the troubles occuring in the airlines sector. Air traffic has come back after 2 years of lockdown. Passengers are willing to fly again (forgetting the carbon footprint ?) but airlines cannot deliver the promise … Lack of people for the airlines who did not succeed to recruit enough, lack of people in the airport to manage security & customs, all of this resulting in not enough aircrafts flying to support the demand. And big surprise, the companies are looking again at the Airbus super jumbo, the A380, the only aircraft able to transport more than 500 passengers in a row. The A380 is not the most efficient aircraft in terms of consumption but the airlines need to optimize the reduced number of flight slots available in the big airports… And the A380 is definitively the best one in this battle. Companies managing A380s are therefore putting back the double deck aircraft into service …

Crypto innovation or crypto buzz ? Over the past days, cryptos have fallen, crashed, and sometimes burned, like the south korean Terra fiasco a couple weeks ago, This week, coinbase fired 18% of its employees (about 1100 people), showing that crypto world is not as stable as we want to believe, some are even talking about a "crypto winter". It is always interesting the see the point of rupture between buzz and innovation. Yet another reminder that Innovation, no matter the topic, must evolve with caution and a sustainable approach, The "fake it until you make it" moto is still alive ... Let’s trust innovation when it deserves it, when it has strong and sustainable foundations...

Electric Vehicles connected with USB-C The move to sustainability is accelerating, with some positive pressure coming from regulators. Once again, Europe is leading the pack in this race to a more sustainable world, with 2 new decisions taken this week. First, from 2035 all brand new cars sold in Europe must be 100% Electric, even hybrid cars won’t be allowed. Second, all mobile phones sold in Europe will be required to have a universal USB-C plug for wired charging by late 2024 - a big revolution for Apple fans. Whilst I’m quietly confident on the move to USB-C, I think the decision around Electrical Vehicles will be quite difficult to implement, especially if you consider all the consequences of this shift. Equipping all houses and car parks with fast electric chargers and deploying charger networks in remote territories represent a huge revolution for car manufacturers & suppliers. The journey won’t be easy ...

This offshore wind turbine is 264 meter tall ... and will produce 16MW, 80.000 MWh per year, enabling to power 20.000 households. A while back, UEA announced the biggest worldwide Solar fied, with 8KM2 and 3,3 millions of Solar pannels powering 90.000 houselholds. Yet, other projects have since then taken up the challenge for the tittle... Green energy is definitively reaching big scales, far from the innovation status of the early 2000s ...

New Space collision! A new collision occurred between a Chinese satellite & a Russian rocket in march. The 2 last big crashes happened in 2007 & 2009, increasing by 70% the number of large debris in LEO -low earth orbit- ! LEO being the new playfield of latest telecom constellation (SpaceX Starlink , OneWeb, ...). Nowadays, around 130 million peaces of space junks, debris, are surrounding the earth. If we don’t change this habit by managing & destroying all these space debris, some scientists think this could increase the number of collisions & debris, with a risk to create a massive exponential constellation of debris that would prevent any rocket to be launched, making humans prisoners of their own planet ...

Do we have to always choose between Joy & Sustainability ? Net Zero, Carbon Neutral, Carbon Footprint, Sustainable Planet, impossible to spend a day without adressing these topics, which are a major improvement for our future. Nevertheless, extremism or radicalisation is never good, as major problematics are never black or white, it’s always a matter of balance. We have always heard of people fighting against innovation, by principle, and we see now people even fighting against all kind of pleasure or leisure that could produce Carbon emission. The Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony for example, replaced fireworks by light drones to reduce pollution & noise ... Cancel 1 firework, once every 4 years, being watched for the pleasure of millions of viewers ... Is it worth it ? I’ve been fighting for years to decrease carbon footprint, being very proud of it, for our kids and their future, but we need to choose our battle to keep a world safe but also enjoyable.

Time to go back to the office, happily ? 2020 was definitively the year of WFH - Work From Home - . Before the lockdown, we had 2 teams : The Pro WFH & the Against WFH . After 10 months of lockdown period, everbody had the opportunity to live the WFH mode. This experience had a huge benefit, providing a real User eXperience for all workers. The Against team had to admit (by eXperience) that you can be very productive working from home , even too much sometimes, needing some regulation ... The Pro team had to admit (by the same eXperience) that a 100% WFH mode can be boring, lacking of social interactions. So once again, the truth will be in between, in hybrid WFH, being highly productive for some tasks remotely but going on meeting teams physically to build social relationship & experience serendipity. Carbon Neutral, Net Zero, what about Trust Zero ? All companies have been committing on their way to decrease their environment impact, mainly on Carbon Footprint. All companies share their ambition and date to become Carbon Neutral first before reaching Net Zero. Carbon Neutral is quite clear : a company compensates the carbon emissions by buying carbon offsets, planting trees. We of course hope all these ‘environmental organizations’ selling offsets are serious enough to make sure these trees are real and well managed to absorb our carbon emissions for at least 3 decades (the promise). But what Net Zero really means ? Net Zero means that all the human & industrial carbon emissions are compensated by the nature through oceans, atmosphere, trees, ... at planet level. So how a company could be Carbon Net Zero ? Scientifically, a company cannot be Net zero as we don’t absorb or eat CO2 ... Carbon Net Zero is a consensus established by a few organizations to convince states & companies to decrease their Carbon footprint with a clear plan and agenda. But being far from a real ‘net zero’, it’s very difficult to compare the real impact of these Net Zero plans depending on firms. Of course, we must go on convincing people & companies to commit on this carbon footprint decrease but a better definition or wording of ‘Net Zero’ would definitively bring more TRUST around this sustainability priority ... Waiting for this, we are all responsible, we can all take personal actions & commitments to increase, or decrease our impact.

Home Office as the new standard ? 2 major Digital companies have communicated home office will become the standard ‘forever’ ! Are Google & Twitter anticipating a new trend ? Not sure ... In 2013, Melissa Meyer (Yahoo CEO) had decided to ban remote office to increase productivity. As usual, human life is not fully digital. Moving from ‘No Home Office’ to ‘Full Home Office’ is definitively a mistake. All companies used to Home Office know truth in the mix, Part Home Office. We have now all the digital tools, infrastructure & platforms to work remotely (home or travel) with a very high level of productivity, decreasing by the way the Carbon Footprint and increasing Well Being. But closing the office will bring other issues, starting with a growing distance between employees & companies, decreasing the sense of belonging and power of brand, even more in latin cultures. The only question is what is the best mix ? Few days a week or few days a month ? This depends on jobs, sectors, companies & personal experience of course. Innovation, Speed & Scale ... A crisis can always be seen as an opportunity. 2020 will definitively remain as a special year, the year of massives changes in personal & professional sides. Some companies have to stop or reduce their business while others are boosting their activities like Netflix, Sony or Zoom. Nevertheless, sizes matters. For the big corporates, scale is not an issue, as Netflix who perfectly managed this crisis as a great opportunity. But for a startup , Unicorn or even a Decacorn, scaling can be an issue. While jumping from 10 to 200 Millions users within a couple of months, Zoom could not manage some security basics. But which company could be able to multiply by 20 its business without any issue ? Ransom of glory, these massive numbers attract also all hackers who want to break the new king. Interesting to see people blaming and banning Zoom while having used their solution for free, for years , without being able to understand or explain clearly which are the exact risks ... We are now living in a very ephemeral world, where people forget very quickly, where people forgot that 2 years ago Facebook was involved in a massive affair, the Cambridge Analytica, where personal data were shared and sold out of any rules. But not a single company banned Facebook at this time, all kept their Corporate Facebook Account to promote their brands, even if the facts were obvious ... The monopoly power. Two sizes, two interests, two policies... No doubt Zoom will learn from this crisis, they will bridge the security gaps as their UX, telecom & video algorithms are clearly world class. But each company needs time to scale, be patient.

Sustainable space on top of a sustainable planet ? A few hours ago, One Web successfully launched 34 new LEO satellites (Low Earth Orbit, below 2000 Km). Amazon is planning the same project named Kuiper. Knowing we have today 4000 satellites flying over our heads (and 300.000 debris ...), do we really need to have so much competition and so many flying objects when we deploy 4G, 5G or FTTH (Optical Fiber) in most of countries ? We should at least encourage the ‘lean constellations’ to minimize the number of satellites. The SpaceX’s rocket Starship exploded on the pad launch during some tests, the 2 windows of the new Tesla Cybertruck crashed during the reveal and the space community is starting to be really annoyed by the Starlink mega constellation, causing massive disturbance for sky observation ... With only 120 satellites launched, where 42.000 are planned to deliver the Starlink network, the visual impact in the sky is already having a huge impact for observers. Do we need to regulate these new projects? When you know that similar projects are able to deliver Worldwide Internet coverage with less than 1000 low orbit satellites (like OneWeb Constellation), do we have to support the concerns & consequences of such constellations with 42000 flying satellites over our heads? Not sure this is a lean sustainable approach ...

Lilium electrical VTOL in the air! A nice video this week coming from Lilium, an innovative project to deliver a new concept of electrical aircraft designed with a VTOL (Vertical Take Off & Landing). But the major difference with classical flying taxis is coming from the ability to also fly as a classical aircraft to cover long distances. Interesting for taking off & landing within the cities but enabling also to connect cities with long distance flights. The major challenge will be of course the autonomy for these hybrid flights. Stay tuned!

Are Electric scooter fleets a sustainability failure ? A few days ago, Lime announced an operating loss above $300 million, showing they are losing money as quickly as they raise it from VCs ... An other competitor, Bird, is on the same trend ... One of the main reasons being the very short lifespan of their vehicles: 45 days ! 45 days being also the delay for each scooting before delivering revenue, unlucky business model ... Lime did not anticipate the lack of ‘respect’ for their nice electrical tools: pedestrians fed up to find scooters on their way, other ones throwing them into rivers or sea, for ‘fun’, generating massive Lithium pollution into the water, many scooters being stolen or damaged, we are far from the sustainable positive valuable model ☹ Let’s hope the massification and maturity of this new market will help the few survivors to build a new real sustainable model.

Winter is coming, Libra is going downhill... A few months ago, Breaking News! Facebook was launching the first Social Network Crypto Currency! 4 months later, the 3 biggests "partners" are leaving the boat (without being really sure they ever entered it...). Bye bye Visa, MasterCard & PayPal. We all know that any project must integrate now 2 major components: Trust and Ecosystem. After Cambridge Analytica Gate, not sure that Facebook was the best model of Trust, to convince their "happy members" to trust their new virtual currency... Second lesson learned, even if Business has to go fast, words should make sense. A letter of intention from Visa or Paypal or any other company is not a formal partnership, even if you are one of the GAFAM or BATX... Trust & Facebook, 2 different worlds ...

The start of the Unicorn’s Bubble? The last weeks have been rude for decacorns in the US. WeWork, Uber and many others are showing the limits of massive investments without clear results or objective economic logic. Over last years, the main KPI to evaluate the success of a StartUp/ScaleUp was the level of ... fund raising. Even worse, a startup showing profits without Venture Capital investment is still considered as a failure, a lack of ambition. As the ones rating the startups are most of the time the same funding these startups, we could question the model: is it fair? Can we trust this rating? We could therefore think about another way of qualifying the startups, as a regular business, based on revenue and margin ... But this is perhaps too much disruptive 😲

Once again, impact of innovation is not coming from invention but from speed of deployment, sustainable deployment ...

Emotion + Speed + Social Networks : Digital Reality is not the real reality ... Facebook & Social Networks seem to become the new only source of information for many people. No time (or no will) to dig into a real complex situation, lack of context, subjective view of information, social networks could become a new danger for democracy. Even more when you know how Facebook is presenting you ‘information’. We receive information from our Facebook ‘friends’, most of the time people sharing the same point of views, leisure, way of life, ... We receive what we like ... A photo, a video, real or fake, outside its context can be seen as reality & spread the World Web within a few hours to reach millions of readers ... Frightening if this is perceived as Information ... Perhaps AI will help soon to solve this burning issue. But for the time being, Diversity, Difference & Curiosity remain our defense.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Alibaba Single Day, what’s next ? Difficult to avoid the massive numbers when you hear about these special days , billions of Dollars being spent during these 3 days … One benefit could be all these products being sent at the same time allow optimizing logistics. But global carbon footprint must be insane … Interesting to see the antagonism between the growing need for lean, going back to our roots, to better human values, will of simplicity, promoting ‘to be’ instead of ‘to have’, and these crazy crowd waves of ‘special days ‘ … Not sure this is the best side of the Digital Consumption Revolution. Could be good to promote a 2019 No Buy Day, or ‘Enjoy Day’ 😊.

Innovation, Risk & Safety

Innovation is the world of new, or how to accelerate the future by using the latest technologies, methods & tools. Difficult to innovate or disrupt without taking any risks. The real question is : how many risks are we able to take, to accept ? And one of the limit is Safety ... One good example could be the ‘Route du Rhum’, one of the famoust Sailing Races. 2 of the 6 leaders (Ultimate Class) have already left the race. Always going higher, bigger & faster, these boats are now reaching the limits of technologies, the limit of safety, human safety ... On Business side, interesting article below pointing out China has now much more Unicorns than the US .... What will be -or is- the next Silicon Valley ... ?

As usual, a few will win a lot to cover the headlines. But most of them could come back soon to their old tech life. Should we trust social networks ?

After Facebook, Google is now making the headlines after a major security flaw in Google plus. Even the Digital leaders keep fragile in front of cybersecurity attacks or privacy rules. As we cannot deny this risk anymore, how responsible are we by sharing too much sensitive information with third parties ? Probably a question that should raise in the future soon ...

Who needs a 8K screen ?

Samsung and LG both unveiled new 8K TVs at the IFA 2018 expo in Germany. Great news ! Really ? Interesting to see that almost no video content (TV or Video broadcasts) is available right now for the public as the 4K TVs are quite recent in the stores. Another interesting point to look at is the energy consumption. As you could imagine, the power needed by these brand new devices is not really aligned with sustainability aspects at global level ... Some could argue that the coming 5G networks will be able to bring these high quality content soon. Yes, with the same energy paradigm. Do we need always to watch 8K content, every time & from every device everywhere ? Not convinced that CNN ‘breaking news’ deserves it ... a poor 2K screen would make the deal ... And you will discover below that a few days ago, Amazon joined Apple in the very closed club of the ... Trillion Dollar valued companies ... Enjoy you 0,5 K reading😊 Patrice

Digital Natives: Generation Z is knocking at the door !

Many studies & reports have been presenting the Generation Y (Millenials) as the first digital native.
